Lux Lounge is unlike any other bar or lounge in Rochester, something that’s won it a loyal following. It’s the type of place you’ll either love or hate. But check it out next time you’re looking for a break from the usual.
The Place: Lux is in Rochester’s South Wedge neighborhood at 666 South Ave. The decor draws its inspiration from the address. The skulls, shrunken heads and extra-large spiders might just be there to scare off the wary. But look deeper. The artwork on the walls is by locals and rotates out every three months.
“The decor is scary, but kitschy,” says bartender Amanda Profit, 31. “I think it actually makes it feel warmer.” Profit has been pouring drinks at Lux since it opened six years ago.
In the fall and winter, Lux has a fire going on the back patio — perfect with a hot cider and bourbon.
The Crowd: During happy hour, the place draws a more middle-aged crowd, but the later it gets, the more mixed the crowd becomes, and late-night patrons tend to be younger.
“There is a jukebox, so you don’t have to listen to music that makes everyone push up against each other,” says regular Kelly Casey, 26 of Rochester. “If you go into the typical bar, you have to worry about what you’re wearing. I like to wear black. I can come here the way I am. It feels like family.”
Theme du jour: Each night of the week features a one-of-a-kind special, culminating on Sunday, which is a three-peat: B.Y.O.B. (Burn Your Own Burger) Night/SIN (Service Industry Night)/Game Night. Monday is Arts and Crafts Night (featuring scissors and glue and $1 off all drafts), and Saturday is Cheap Date Night (well drinks are $2.50 from 9 to 11 p.m.) For all the details, go to: www.lux666.com
